September 17- Rock Springs High School,

The Mustangs, playing their second game of the day, put any doubt of their being tired away very quickly, as Deni Jacobs stole a pass in the backfield and scored in the 8th minute of the game. Ashley Roberts joined in the fun as she took a pass from Brooke McDonald and scored in the tenth minute to make the score 2-0. Air Force held tough for the next 23 minutes, then the flood gates opened. Caitlyn Chesnovar scored in the 33rd minute, then Ashley Roberts added two more goals in the 39th and 42nd minutes to make the score 5-0. Deni Jacobs scored her second goal in the 45th minute to make it 6-0 at half. With the game basically over, the Mustangs started working the ball and working on their control, but they didn't stop attacking the goal. Coral Higuera scored her first goal of the season in the 61st minute, then she scored again one minute later. Ashley Roberts tied the Mustang record of 4 goals in a game less than two minutes later as she scored on a free kick. Leading 9-0 the Mustangs continued to possess the ball and in the 72nd minute, Crystal Tebbs ended the scoring as she scored her first goal of the season to make the score 10-0. The Mustangs set a team record for most goals scored, but the most impressive part was that they scored every goal within the framework of their offense. It was an amazing show of control and power as the Mustangs get ready to host LCCC this Wednesday at Crossroads Field.

Mustangs Win Two in a Row!!

Sept 17- Rock Springs High School,

The Mustang women took the field against the Maveriks from Northwest Kansas Tech again this morning looking for another win and they didn't disappoint! The Mustangs started the game pressuring the Maveriks back line and in the tenth minute it took its' toll, as the Maveriks scored an own goal to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. The pressure didn't let up and Deni Jacobs took an assist from Mindy McDonald to make it 2-0 in the 25th minute. Jacobs continued to shine as she scored again, five minutes later off an assist from Brooke McDonald to end the half leading 3-0. The Mustangs continued their tough play as the half began and Deni Jacobs continued to dominate. Four minutes into the half, Coral Higuera sent a pass to Deni, who earned her hat trick by hammering the ball into the net to make the lead 4-0. The Mustangs continued to dominate play as they passed the ball beautifully and kept possession away from the Maveriks. Kenzie Williams finished the scoring in the 74th minute as she took a corner kick from Baileigh Petty and calmly tapped the ball into the net. The game finished 5-0 and the Mustangs completely dominated the game out shooting the Maveriks 22 to 6 and taking 7 corner kicks to 0 for the Mustangs. Their next game is this afternoon at 5 pm vs Air Force Prep.

NWKTC falls in Rock Springs

September 16-Rock Springs-

The Lady Maveriks of NWKTC rolled into Rock Springs looking to continue the downward spiral of the Mustangs. The Mustangs were entering the game with a twist of their regular 3-4-3, thanks to the gentle prodding of Kelsey Allen. Even though they were playing in a new system, the Mustangs dominated play from the opening whistle. Using short simple passes, the Mustangs held the ball on their side of the field for most of the half. The Lady Maverik defense held firm, despite the offensive onslaught by the Mustangs and the first half ended 0-0.

As the second half began, the Mustangs continued to reign shots on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net. NWKTC continued to figh,t and try to counterattack, but the new defense, led by Sequoia Hair held firm and would not allow any clean shots. Then, in the 70th minute, Mindy McDonald fed the ball to a cutting Deni Jacobs, who took the ball and calmly placed the ball into the side netting for a 1-0 lead. The Maveriks had one last effort and would have scored had it not been for a spectacular save by Kenzie Williams, who saved her shutout with her diving save. The clock finally wound down and the Mustangs earned their second win of the year and first official shutout as well. The win improves the Mustangs record to 2-3 as they prepare for a rematch vs. NWKTC tomorrow and a game vs. Air Force Prep too.

September 9- Rock Springs-

The Mustangs earned their first win of the season as the UW women's club canceled their game scheduled for today, which led to a 1-0 win. This improves the Mustangs record to 1-3 as they prepare for Northwest Kansas Tech next Friday and Saturday.

Bruins prove too much for the Mustangs

September 8- Rock Springs-

Coming off a devastating loss to LCCC, the Mustangs looked to rebound against archrival SLCC. As the game began, it looked like the Mustangs were going to dominate. For the first five minutes, the Mustangs were peppering the Bruin goal with shots, but they couldn't find the back of the net. The Bruins began to counterattack and scored in bunches during the first half. It was too much Brittany Evans, who had a hat trick in the first half, as the Bruins led 5-0 at half time.

The beleaguered Mustangs came off the field shellshocked about what had occurred in the first half. After some discussion, they switched formations to 4-4-2, with a sweeper stopper.Using their trademark tenacity, the Mustangs would not give up. Although trailing by five, the Mustangs clawed back. Baileigh Petty started the scoring, as she took a freekick and expertly placed over the keepers heat for a goal. Ashley Roberts took a pass from Deni Jacobs and put the second goal of the game in to make the score 6-2. SLCC added three more goals to lead 9-2, but the Mustangs would not quit as Ashley fed Mindy McDonald on a beautiful sweet spot run to end the Mustang scoring. Losing 9-3 is a painful experience, but the Mustangs showed heart again as they fought until the final whistle and were able to score some goals. The loss drops the Mustangs to 0-3 and 0-2 in Region IX. There is little time for sulking as the Mustangs head to Laramie tomorrow for a game against the UW women's club team.

September 7- Cheyenne, Wyoming-

On a cloudy, dreary day the Mustangs traveled to Cheyenne to take on the Eagles of LCCC. The game started slow, and went downhill quickly. LCCC attacked the goal early and often and were leading 3-0 after fifteen minutes. The Mustangs fought to get into the game, they even switched formations, but they could not find their rhythm and trailed at half 6-0.

It was a discouraged group of girls at halftime, but an impassioned speach from Kenzie Williams, brought the team around and inspired the team to play a better the second half. Returning to the 3-4-3 the Mustangs played a much more competitive second half. Working together they were able to form some offense, but couldn't find the net. It was a real tribute to the girls that they didn't quit on each other and fought through to the bitter end. Unfortunately, it didn't equal a victory. The loss drops them to 0-2 and 0-2 in region play, with SlCC coming up at home tomorrow.

Mustang player of the game- Kenzie Williams- who played inspired soccer, didn't give up on herself, or her team and was a true leader all game.

August 31- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The Mustang women played their home opener today and it was one of the strangest games ever in Mustang history. The weather was perfect during pre-game warmups and at 3:00 pm just before kick off, the heavens opened up. For the next 3 hours, rain fell, lightning struck, and hail came from nowhere. It looked like the games were going to be canceled, when Rock Springs High School came to the rescue to allow the games to be played at their field. The game started fast and furious, inspite of the three hour delay, and the Lady Trappers looked like they were going to destroy the Mustangs. For the first five minutes, they hammered the Mustang goal, but Kenzie Williams kept the ball out of the net. Deni Jacobs scored the first goal of the year, in the 34th minute, as she headed the ball past the keeper off a beautiful cross from Ashley Roberts. The Lady Trappers evened the score 4 minutes later and the half ended 1-1.

Both teams fought hard during the second half, but excellent goal play from both teams kept the score tied at the end of regulation. Mother Nature entered the fray again as the hail returned and caused another twenty minute weather delay. Starting overtime, the Mustangs took over the game. Dominating play, they didn't give up a shot in the first over time, but couldn't find the back of the net to put the game away. The Mustangs continued to dominate play in the second overtime both Deni Jacobs and Ashley Roberts had great looks at the goal, but just missed. The Lady Trappers took advantage of their only look in the 108th minute and put a perfect shot over Kenzies hands to end the game 2-1. It was a great game to watch and play. Both teams gave everything and the Mustangs, unfortunately, had to take the loss. The effort and teamwork showed by the Mustangs give great hope for the rest of the season and serve notice that they are a force to be reckoned with the rest of the season. The saddest note of the game was losing Shelby Clayson for the season. Shelby tore her ACL and MCL in the second half and her leadership and spirit will be missed. The loss takes the Mustangs to 0-1 and 0-1 in region IX. The next game is 9/7 vs LCCC in Cheyenne.

Scrimmage #3- Meridian, Idaho

August 27- Coming into their 3rd and final scrimmage, the Mustangs were looking to get their first win of the season. They started fast and furious. Mindy McDonald started the scoring in the 8th minute, as she took a corner kick from Ashley Roberts and chested it into the goal. Leading 1-0, the Mustangs wanted more and kept pressuring the Coyotes of College of Idaho. Deni Jacobs, took a beautiful header from Caitlyn Chesnovar, and scored her second goal of the year for a 2-0 lead. The Coyotes refused to fold under the relentless pressure of the Mustangs and scored just before half to trail 2-1.
It was a tale of two halves for the Mustangs; and the outcome was not what was expected. The Coyotes came out ready and determined to start the second half and the Mustangs melted under pressure. They gave up the equalizing goal about 5 minutes into the second half and proceeded to give up 5 more goals in the following 20 minutes. It was an impressive barrage and the Mustangs had no answers for what the Coyotes were doing. Trailing 6-2, the Mustangs could have folded and quit, but they didn't. Continuing a trend that is promising, the Mustang women bowed their necks and fought back. Returning to their pressure system, they turned the tide of the game and fought back. The final fifteen minutes were a scoreless battle, where control of the ball was taken by the Mustang women. Losing 6-2 was not the outcome they sought, but the Mustangs found their heart. Trusting their teammates helped them take a potentially devastating loss and turn it into a positive. The beauty of these girls is that they didn't turn against each other, they became a team and that's what they were trying to find. The regular season starts on August 31st in Rock Springs versus Northwest CC.

Scrimmage #2- Ontario, Oregon

August 26- After taking a 9 hour road trip, the Mustangs squared off against the Lady Chukkars of Treasure Valley CC. Playing in 105 degree heat, the Mustangs came out on their heels. Inspite of being a little flat, the Mustangs controlled the tempo and the ball, but couldn't penetrate a solid defense to score. The Chukkars took advantage of their counter attacking opportunities and scored in the 15th and 25th minutes to lead 2-0 at halftime. There were bright spots in the first half, especially Kady Tolley, whose inspired play off the bench kept the Mustangs close in the first half.
As the second half started, the Mustangs began to impose their style of play on the Lady Chukkars. Using the pressure of the 3-4-3, the ball seldom left the Mustangs side of the field. The ball control of the Mustangs began to take its toll on Chukkars, as the fouls piled up for the Mustangs. Finally, in the 65th minute, Ashley Roberts was fouled and had a free kick from 30 yards out. Ashley lined up the kick and calmly placed it over the keepers outstretched hands and into the back of the net. Trailing 2-1 the Mustangs turned up the pressure and earned more opportunties to score. However, good defense and a missed call cost Ashley her second goal. The Chukkars took advantage of their one decent counterattack and scored again in the 75th minute to put the game away with a 3-1 win.
Inspite of their second preseason loss, the Mustangs showed great heart in their play and effort during the second half. The Mustangs gave a great team effort and never gave up. Their next game is Saturday the 27th vs College of Idaho.

Scrimmage #1 2011

August 17- Rock Springs, Wy-

In the first ever Alumni game, the Mustang Alumni came out the winners by a 4-1 score. On a beautiful summer afternoon, the new Mustangs squared off against the all-stars of the past four years. The Alumni, featuring Jay Himelright, Sloan Allred, Jessica Little, Kylie Ashton, Adar Westling, and Kaitlin Berberich started strong; dominating play for the first ten minutes of the first half. However, solid play from Kenzie Williams kept the alumni from scoring. As the Mustangs became more comfortable with their new teammates and new system, they began to play solid soccer. Both teams exchanged shots until the 34th minutes when Jay Himelright stole the ball and scored on a patented breakaway shot. The Mustangs struck back in the next minute, as Jessica Monsen sent a perfect through ball to Deni Jacobs, who took the ball to the left and placed a perfect shot across the box and into the side netting to tie the score 1-1. As the second half started, the new Mustangs started to control the ball and connect in their passing game. Inspite of their ball control, the Mustangs couldn't find the back of the net. It was a case of too much unselfishness, as the girls made too many extra passes and delayed in taking open shots. The alumni teamed, aided by 4 high school boys, took adavantage of the missed shots and scored 3 goals on breakaways to put the game away in the second half.

All in all, it was a positive experience, where the Mustangs were able to get onto the field and play a solid opponent. Despite the loss, the Mustangs look promising for the season, as they worked well as a team and moved the ball very efficiently. Great play by the keepers, defense, and midfield show a great season is coming. The Mustangs now prepare for two more games on the 26th and 27th in Oregon vs TVCC and College of Idaho.

Procedure for move-ins – Saturday Aug. 6thThose Living in the Dorms - Will need to stop into Resident Assistants Desk at Rocky Mountain Hall (dorm on campus). The Housing Department will have your dorm room information there, tell them that you are a member of the women’s soccer team and they will get you set to move in. You can stop by Rocky Mountain Hall between 10:00am- 11:00am on Saturday August 6th.

Those not Living in the Dorms – You are not required to be on campus during move-in times but can come up to the college and help your teammates to move in, if you wish. However, you need to be at all other meetings, physicals and practice etc... on Saturday.

Team Physicals - Everyone needs to be to the physicals at 11:30am at the Rushmore Gymnasium on the South end of the WWCC Campus. The physicals will be done in the women's locker room and in the gymnasium itself.

WWCC Media Day - After you are finished with the physicals there will be pictures and members of the media for interviews. This will be from 1:00pm - 2:00pm for the women's soccer team. Some of the interviews will be in person and some will be via phone etc... These will be in the WWCC Gym and in the WWCC Team Room. Those who gave me their cell phone number for their local paper - remember to bring your cell phone.

Fitness test- there will be a team fitness test at 1:00 pm at Rock Springs High School track. We will be doing the Cooper fitness test, which consists of running as far as you can for 12 minutes(optimum time is 1:39 per lap) and some sprints (5 80's). This will go a long way into telling my who is ready for two-a-days.

Team Barbeque - There will be a team barbeque on Saturday at 6:00pm at coach smith's house(2024 Carter Ave) This meeting will be our chance to introduce ourselves and for the coaching staff to introduce our expectations to you for practice. Parents are invited and welcome, please rsvp by phone (307) 371-1089, or email- bwsmith@wwcc.wy.edu so I can get an accurate head count.

Team Scrimmage – There will be a team scrimmage on Saturday at 3:00 pm on the WWCC Campus field (south end of campus underneath the big light blue water tower). Friends and family are welcome to stay and watch.

Paperwork needed for first two weeks – August 6th – August 22nd
Physicals – Remember this will be done on August 6th in Rock Springs. They will be paid for by WWCC.Financial Aid - If you have not signed and turned in your letters of intent or other financial papers please do so and turn them in as soon as possible. (Remember National Letters of Intent are timed documents and need to be turned in quickly) You can bring them to WWCC on Monday and turn them into room #1004. I will be checking with the Financial Aid office during our first week to see what they need from each player.Insurance - If you have not already completed and mailed back all of your insurance forms you will not be able to participate until at least Monday. If you have not yet mailed them in you will have to turn those in at the Athletic Office, room #3011. Those turning in their paperwork on Monday will need to get a note from the athletics secretary, Debi Monroe, that you are able to practice. If your paperwork is not turned in, then you will not be practicing until it is all completed and turned in. The athletic office is not open on Saturday August 6th so you have to send in your insurance info before you arrive if you want to participate in the team scrimmage of Saturday August 6th.

You cannot just show up to this you have to request a spot. *At Registration everyone has to take the Compass Placement Test unless otherwise notified. These tests are administered on the same day as registration so plan to come take the tests before you register. (1pm -6pm on this is also required before you can register)

Frequently Asked Questions for moving in and First 2 weeks
Housing during our first two weeks – The school will pay for the housing during this time. There will be no additional charges for staying on campus during this time. You will be living in the dorm room that you have been assigned for the rest of the season with your roommates for the year.Food during our first two weeks – The college will also pay for three meals a day, starting on Monday August 8th. There will not be an additional charge for eating at the cafeteria during this time. You will have to eat at the appointed team meal times to get the meals. You might want to bring some money for snacks beyond that which the college will provide. Also, the cafeteria is not open before school starts and on Sundays so bring money to pay for meals that day. The athletic teams are trying to plan a meal for August 6th and also August 7th but there are a couple of meals there that the players need to plan on taking care of.

Equipment needed for practices - Remember to bring soccer cleats, shin guards, soccer socks, several pairs of work-out clothes both warm and cool weather, tennis shoes and a water bottle/container. We have ordered practice gear for the team but it may not arrive here before 8/6 and you will want other work-out clothes since we will train two or three times a day. I would request that all players bring their swimming suits as we may do some swimming/training in the water.

Team Scrimmage - Will be held on Saturday August 6th at 3pm - 5pm at the WWCC Campus field.

First practice – Will be held at 9:00 am – 11:30 am on Monday August 9th at the school practice field. We will use the bulk on this first practice to work on ball skills, touches conditioning etc... Like almost all practices we will finish with some additional conditioning.

Additional Items needed – Bring all the items you will need for college. We do have our first three Sundays off before school starts. For some this may be long enough to go home and get additional items they left behind but for others it may not be a long enough break so bring all of the items necessary for your dorm and essential college life.What you can expect from practices? – I firmly believe that to get better you must include the soccer ball in your training. But, I also know that we need to be in game shape as soon as possible. We will condition every practice, we will lift weights, we will do plyos and speed training. We will also get touches on the ball every practice. We will run sprints every practice, if you do not come to WWCC in shape you will struggle! You need to do all of your summer work-out program or the first week or two of practice will be painful for you and it might cost you playing time in our first games, which I will use to determine a set starting line-up and a substitution rotation.

What if your paperwork is not completed or only half done? – If any of your athletic paperwork (physicals, insurance etc…) is not completely done you will have to get it finished before you can practice. All other paperwork needs to be finished before you are eligible to play in a scrimmage or a match.

Summer Update #2- July

All players need to be sure that you have all paperwork completed before the 1st practice.

1-Apply for admissions (if not done), www.wwcc.wy.edu/admissions/registra.htm
2-Apply for housing (if not done), see www.wwcc.wy.edu/housing/Be sure to tell them that you are on a soccer scholarship.
3-Send in your deposit for housing (if not done) - $150 This should have been done before August 1st or your room reservation will be lost.
4- Complete the FAFSA for financial aid (if not done), see www.fafsa.ed.gov/ WWCC cannot award you any money until this is completed (academic or athletic)
5- Sign & return 1 copy of National Letter of Intent and WWCC Letter of Intent. If your NLI is not there yet be patient (it will come when all paperwork is cleared).
6- For new students at WWCC, you need to complete a new student orientation and advising. Here are the dates and times: July 12th at 1pm or 6pm, July 27th at 1pm or 6pm, August 4th at 1pm or 6pm and August 8th at 1pm and 6pm. When you decide which best fits your schedule please register at www.wwcc.wy.edu/advising/notice.htm Also realize you will already be on campus for the August 8th date so it would work well for most of you. You must reserve a spot in these sessions so reserve your spot now. YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO PLAY UNTIL YOU COMPLETE THIS. Also if possible, inform me when you are coming so I can meet you on campus that day.
7- Complete the NJCAA eligibility affidavit, go to http://www.wwcc.wy.edu/athletics/eligibility_affidavit.pdf and print it out, fill it out and either mail it to the college - care of Financial Aide or to my home. Get a hold of me for the address.
8- Physicals will be done on Saturday August 6th at 11 am in Rushmore Gymnasium on WWCC Campus.
9- The WWCC athletic will be mailing you insurance information soon. You should be receiving this around July 10th. You need to complete these and return it as quickly as possible.
10- Don’t wait for the last minute to get these done or you will not be able to practice which means you will not be able to play.

Preseason Practices

We will ask you to come to campus on Saturday August 6th from 9:30-10 to check-in to your dorms. Your physicals will be taken care of on the 6th at 11am at Rushmore Gymnasium. Times for your time trials and the Red and White Scrimmage will be posted soon.

Mustang women excel in the classroom!!

June 29, 2011- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The national team grade point averages were announced today and the Mustang women earned the 4th highest GPA in the country!! Excellence in the classroom is always a goal for the Mustangs and the girls hard work paid off as they climbed eight spots higher from 2010. We are so proud of each and every player and all they did to help the team succeed off of the field.

SUMMER UPDATE #1

All Players need to have all paperwork and administrative items taken care off and handed in before the first practice. DO NOT DELAY ON THIS STUFF GET IT DONE NOW !!

1) If you have not done so please apply for admissions at the college asap. See www.wwcc.wy.edu/admissions/registra.htm this takes about 10 - 15 minutes.
2) If you have not done so please apply for housing on campus. See www.wwcc.wy.edu/housing/ and please inform them that you are a member of the men's soccer team there should be rooms reserved for you
3) Send in your housing deposit of $150.00. The sooner this is done the better. They usually need it by August 1st. You can even send it in via the telephone at 307-382 - 1845.
4) Complete the FAFSA this is found at www.fafsa.ed.gov/ (this is for players receiving any financial aid and are US citizens) WWCC cannot award any federal money (scholarships - academic or athletic) until this is completed.
5) If you have not already done so sign and return 1 copy of your National Letter of Intent and your WWCC Letter of Intent. This is of course for those who are receiving a scholarship for soccer, all walk-ons need not worry about this step. If your NLI has not yet arrived it will arrive soon after you get all paperwork done. Some of you I still need some paperwork done like your eligibility affidavit before we can process it.
6) For those who have not yet got your National Letter of Intent you need to go to;http://www.wwcc.wy.edu/athletics/eligibility_affidavit.pdf and print it out, fill it out and either mail it to the college care of Financial Aide or to my home. Get a hold of me for the address. This needs to be done before you can get your National Letter of Intent.
7) For all new students WWCC you need to attend a new student orientation and advising. The dates and times for this summer are; June 15th at 6pm, June 23rd at 1pm or 6pm, July 12th at 1pm or 6pm, July 27th at 1pm or 6pm, and August 8th at 1pm and 6pm. When you decide which best fits your schedule please register at www.wwcc.wy.edu/advising/notice.htm Also realize you will already be on campus for the August 8th date so it would work well for most of you. You must reserve a spot in these sessions so reserve your spot now. YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO PLAY UNTIL YOU COMPLETE THIS. Also if possible, inform me when you are coming so I can meet you on campus that day.
8) Physicals will be taken care of by the college and all athletes need to complete the physicals before they can be cleared to practice. As of right now the physicals are scheduled for Saturday August 6th in Rock Springs.
9) When you register for classes this fall please realize that all practices when school starts will be from 4:00pm to 6:00pm or 6:00pm to 8:00pm so try not to schedule classes/labs during those times. Also please realize that the womens 's soccer program expects you to have 15 credits that will help you on your way to graduate.
10) As of right now we are planning on having everyone move in on Friday August 5th with our first practice being the afternoon of the 6th. Things sometimes change due to the availability of dorms etc...
11) Please send your final official high school and any official college transcripts to WWCC as soon as they are available. This is very important; the transcripts need to be cleared for you to be eligible to play in the fall.
12) See link to the right entitled Offseason Workouts to see what you should be doing every day this summer to stay fit. We will have a fitness test on the first day this fall and if you are not fit, it will show and it could effect your playing time. Starters for the first scrimmage will be selected from those players who are the most fit the first week of camp.

The Mustang womens team looks to be a force to be reckoned with in 2011 as nine sophomores return! Kaitlin Berberich, Caitlyn Chesnovar, Shelby Clayson, Whitney Cranmore, Brooke McDonald, Jessica Monsen, Kathryn Peel, Ashley Roberts, and Kelly Uriarte have all committed to return to Western in the Fall. All of these young ladies played an integral part in the success of the Mustangs, on and off the field. We are ecstatic to have them again and look forward to bigger and better things in 2011!!

These four women represent the best in Mustang athletics as they showed their determination in earning their Associates Degrees from Western, proving that women's soccer is about more than just success on the field. Kady commits to the Mustangs

After months of deliberation, Kady Tolley has verbally committed to Western Wyoming. Kady, pictured in white, is from Herriman, Utah where she played for Herriman High School. At Herriman, Kady played midfield, where she excelled and earned all-region honors. She has great ball skills, she's fast, physical, versatile, and determined to succeed. Her leadership qualities led her to be the team captain her senior year. These are all qualities that will help Western climb to the top of Region IX. Kady is an excellent student too, here determination in the classroom will also help the Mustangs off the field. Kady is passionate about playing soccer and succeeding in life, we are very excited that she has picked Western for the next two seasons!!

Sequoia signs with the Mustangs!!

May 3- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

Sequoia Hair signed her National Letter of Intent today and joined the Mustang family. Sequoia is coming to Western from Bountiful High in Utah, where she was a four year starter for the Lady Braves. Bountiful, won 3 region titals with Sequoia and is a perennial contender for the 5A state playoffs, where they finished second in her sophomore year. Sequoia is also the captain and MVP of her club team, where they have won several club titles with her leadership. Quoia has great speed and foot skills and plays every position, except keeper. Quoia, also loves to give back to the community, as she coaches little league soccer and helps with youth soccer camps every summer. Last, but not least, Quoia is a great student. Her hard work in the classroom will also help the Mustangs off the field as well as they continue to succeed academically as well. We are excited to have Sequoia on our team and as a member of the Mustang Family!!

Keisha commits to Western!!

Keisha Rogerson signed her national letter fo intent for the Mustangs adding depth and versatility to the Mustangs defense. Keisha has played soccer since she was 6 years old. Playing for Hunter High School, in Utah, she made varsity the varsity team her freshman year and earned honorable mention all-region honors that season. She has been a starter since then and was named all-region 2nd team her junior year. A torn ACL cost Keisha her senior year, but she has rebounded nicely for her club season. During her recovery Keisha fell in love with serving others. As a member of Youthlinc and other organizations, she helps many people. Keisha is even planning on going to Mexico this summer to serve those in need in small towns. Her major in school will be special education, which again, will give her the opportunity to serve. Keisha will help the Mustangs succeed, not only on the field, but in the classroom and finding service opportunities as well. Welcome Keisha, we look forward to a great two years.

April 9- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The Mustang women put on a mini-clinic for Free Day today. The cool weather could not dampen the spirits of the participants. With over 150 people in the auxiliary gym, it was a little crowded, but Brooke McDonald, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Monsen, and Kathryn Peel dove right in and ran some basic drills and had a blast with kids of all ages and sizes. The girls ran shooting, passing, and defensive drills with all the kids and then put on juggling exhibition after the drills. The kids loved it and some even challenged the girls to juggling contests., not surprisingly, the girls won! It was a great day for everybody involved and a fun opportunity for the Mustang women to give back to the community.

The Mustang women stole a great player from Dixie St. College today, as Kenzie Williams signed her national letter of intent to play for the Mustangs. Kenzie is an amazing athlete, who earned 9 varsity letters from Bear River High School in Utah. Kenzie excels at volleyball, softball, soccer, golf and rodeo. We just feel lucky that she decided to come defend the goal for Western for the next two seasons!! As well as being an amazing keeper, Kenzie excels in the classroom and that will help the Mustang women continue their dominance with grades as well. Crystal Tebbs became the newest member of the Mustangs as she verbally committed today! Crystal is another addition from the Lone Peak program and we are only too happy to have her here at Western! Crystal is a versatile player; she played wing and defense for Lone Peak and Utah Soccer Alliance. Her versatility will strengthen the Mustangs at both positions, and having 5 brothers has toughened Crystal up, which will help her to succeed here at Western. Soccer is not her only passion, Crystal also plays the violin, guitar, piano, and she even dabbles in singing. Crystal is a well-rounded, hard working player and student which can only make the Mustangs stronger for the next two seasons. Mindy McDonald commits to Western!!

Today the Mustang midfield got stronger and better, as Mindy McDonald verbally committed to Western. Mindy ended a long search of schools and, to our benefit, she chose Western. Mindy is a centermidfielder with exceptional foot skills and field vision, which will help the Mustangs control the field. Mindy is natural leader, she was team captain of her high school and club teams this season and she helped Lone Peak reach the state playoffs in 2010. She was also named MVP of her club team multiple times. Mindy's drive also carries into the classroom, where she is ranked #1 in her class of 713 and earned Academic All-State in 2010. We are extremely excited to have Mindy on our team and look forward to having her, along with her sister Brooke, dominate the middle of the field for the Mustangs in 2011.

The Mustang Women's team perhaps picked up their most well-rounded girl, ever. Deni Jacobs signed her national letter of intent to play in 2011 and we are extremely excited to have her. Deni, who lives in Cedar Hills Utah and was a 3 year letterman at Lone Peak High, looks to strengthen the Mustangs at the forward position. Deni led her club team in scoring last season and was also second team All-Region in 2010. Deni is lightning quick, having lettered two years in track and tough, she has earned her black belt in karate, which are two characteristics that the Mustangs love. She also found time in high school to be the Prom Queen, Outstanding Junior English Student, and Senior Class Secretary. We are ecstatic to have Deni join the Mustang family and look forward to two years of excellence on and off the field with her help.

October 22- Scottsbluff, Nebraska-

The Mustangs entered the Region IX semi-final game confident that they were going to advance to the finals for the first time. Western Nebraska, unfortunately, had different plans. From the opening whistle, it was apparent, which team wanted the game more. The Cougars came out very determined and strong, and were far more aggressive. The Mustangs did play hard and made every effort to compete, but the Cougars were just better on this day. The Cougars scored their first goal on a corner kick in the 15th minute, and put another in the net 12 minutes later. Trailing 2-0, the Mustangs realized that their season was slipping away and tried to match the Cougars instensity. This cost them, as Shelby Clayson was red carded a few minutes later, leaving the Mustangs without their center defender. This hurt the Mustangs in more ways than one, because Caitlyn Chesnovar had to slide back and play defense, thus hurting the Mustangs attack. Despite the Cougars aggression, they only led 3-0 at half. The Mustangs came out determined to make the game close in the second half, but 6 minutes into the half, the Cougars earned their 4th and final goal. Trailing 4-0, the Mustangs played with their trademark determination to never quit, but the Cougars had answers for every attack the Mustangs made. Caitlyn Chesnovar scored the Mustangs lone goal in the 80th minute, as she came from her defensive position to hammer a rebound into the net. The final score was 4-1 and it was a bitter pill to swallow for the 4 sophomores. We want to thank Jay Himelright, Alyssa Moreno, Sloan Allred, and Adar Westling for the best two years Western has had!! They were a huge part of the Mustangs success and were key in teaching the freshmen the "Mustang Way" to play.

Cougars nip Mustangs in Regular Season Finale

October 16- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The Mustang women came into their final home game of the season, battered, tired, and ready to close out their season on a positive note. Playing a Western Nebraska team that they had beaten 5-0 two weeks previously, the Mustangs knew that if they didn't lose by 5 goals, they would finish in 2nd place for the first time in team history. The Mustangs came to play and Caitlyn Chesonvar put them ahead in the 13th minute with rebound goal. Leading 1-0, the Mustangs continued to play solid soccer, but the Cougars fought hard to stay in the game. Both teams had their chances, but neither found the goal as the half ended. The second half was more of the same, both teams making runs and having good shots, but both keepers played exceptionally well. The Cougars finally found the net in the 80th minute, tying the score 1-1 and that's how regulation ended. As overtime started both teams continued to battle, in typical region ix fashion, and the first OT ended with the score still tied. The Mustangs lack of depth finally caught up to them in the 2nd overtime. In the 96th minute, Kristi Blicharz, came around the end and placed the ball into the lower corner to win the game 2-1. Although the loss was disappointing, the Mustangs still have much to be proud of. They finished in 2nd place for the first time in team history and are assured of having a winning record for the first time as well. The loss dropped their record to 10-7, as they look forward to the Region IX playoffs and a rematch with Western Nebraska.

Cardinal get the best of Mustangs...again.

October 15- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The NIC Cardinal rolled into Crossroads field looking forward to a rematch vs the Mustang Women. NIC was ready to play, as they put in their first goal in the first two minutes. The Mustangs settled down and began to counterattack. The Cardinal were ready for all the Mustangs efforts and they answered every attack the Mustangs sent at them. Trailing 3-0 at halftime, the Mustangs weren't down, they knew they were still in the game. They regrouped and came out fast and furious. However, the Cardinal defense stayed disciplined and stout, which kept Mustangs out of the goal. Unfortunately, the game turned a little chippy as the second half continued, and it didn't work in the Mustangs favor. Katie Engstrom got kicked in the face as the Cardinal scored off a hand ball in the box, surprisingly, there was no call. Losing their keeper hurt the Mustangs and energized the Cardinal. Not five minutes later Kelly Uriarte and a Cardinal player got red cards, as the Cardinal player kicked Kelly, while she was on the ground. Again, it was a baffling call, as Uriarte protected herself, yet received a red card. So, the final score was 4-0 and it was a frustrating loss for the Mustangs. Inspite of giving 110% effort, they came up short and, although, the officiating didn't beat them, it certainly didn't help them either. So, being down 3 players, Kathryn Peel broke her wrist in the game, the Mustangs prepare to play Western Nebraska tomorrow at 11 in their final home game of the season.

Mustangs Rebound!!

October, 10- Greeley, Colorado-

The Mustang women entered their third match in three days, hoping for a big win to advance to the tournament semi-finals. Facing an overmatched Johnson and Wells team, the win looked pretty certain, but a shutout was needed. The Mustangs came out hard and fast, as Alaska crossed a ball to Alyssa, who headed it in for a 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute. Although the Mustangs continued to pepper the goal with shots, they couldn't find the net until Caitlyn Chesnovar took a pass from Alaska and scored in the 25th minute to lead 2-0 at half. Determined to advance, the Mustangs stayed aggressive and in the 48th minute Caitlyn scored her second goal of the game, taking a goal kick and scoring before the keeper got back into position. The Mustangs continued to attack, keeping the ball on their half of the field constantly, but they Johnson and Wells keeper fought valiantly to keep the score down. The final goal came in the 64th minute as Shelby Clayson, took a pass from Brooke McDonald, collided with the keeper and the ball rolled into the goal for her first goal of the season. Inspite of their efforts, the Mustangs fell short of the semi's, due to goal differential. However, it was a good experience for the Mustangs who finished 2nd in their bracket and fought hard in every game. Their record improves to 10-5, as they look to two home games next week to end their regular season vs NIC on Friday, and Western Nebraska on Saturday.

October 9- Greeley, Colorado-

In round two of the tournament, the Mustangs squared off against the Bruins of SLCC for the third time this season. Looking for their first win ever vs. the Bruins the Mustangs were anxious to get off to a good start, but the Bruins came out the aggressor and scored in the 3rd minute due to a miscommunication between Theo and Adar. Trailing early, the Mustangs could have folded, but they fought back, keeping the Bruins out of the net. Alyssa Moreno scored the equalizer on a free kick in the eighteenth minute. It was a beautiful shot from 4o yards out, that the SLCC keeper had no chance of stopping. It seemed everything was going the Mustangs way going into halftime tied 1-1. Then it seemed that they ran into kryptonite on the field. The second half was dominated by the Bruins, who scored 4 goals and put the game away early in the second half. No matter what the Mustangs did, the Bruins had an answer. It was a frustrating loss, not only because it was SLCC, but it puts the Mustangs in a bad spot to advance to the tournament semi-finals on Sunday. The Mustangs record is now 9-5 with a game vs Johnson and Wells Sunday Morning.

Mustangs take down UNC.

October, 8- Greeley, Colorado-

In their opening match in the UNC Invitational Tournament, the Mustang women played the host team in a tough match. Both teams were unsure of each other in the first half, and they played that way. Both teams had good looks at the goal, and Alyssa Moreno even scored, although a loose net and an out of position AR disallowed the goal, so the half ended in a 0-0 tie. As the second half began, the Lady Bears began to control the ball and the tempo. This passing confused the Mustangs and cost them a goal. Trailing 1-0 the Mustangs responded, as Caitlyn Chesnovar fed Alyssa Moreno for the equalizing goal in the 52nd minute. The Mustang reserves entered the game in effort to stop the Bears passing game, but UNC scored on a corner to lead 2-1 in the 56th minute. As they have all year, the Mustangs refused to lose and turned their game up a notch. Caitlyn Chesnovar was the catalyst again, as she sent a through ball to Jay, who sidestepped the keeper and put the ball into the empty net for the equalizer. The scoring frenzy slowed as both teams tightened their defense for the next 7 minutes. Then Brooke McDonald fed Alyssa on the left wing, where she hit a beautiful shot from 30 yards out, roofing the keeper for the game winning goal. The win improves the Mustangs record to 9-5 and they look forward to a rematch vs SLCC tomorrow for round two of pool play.

Mustangs give back!!

October 6, Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The Mustang women took a day off from practice to day to give back to Rock Springs in a couple of ways. The team started their afternoon at the Senior Center, where they took part in "Step up for Kids" to help United Way raise money for childrens education. The girls volunteered to help and help they did, as they danced, made cookies, and had a great time playing with kids.

It was a fun way to give back to the community and help raise money for a great cause.

The girls then piled into their cars and drove to Century Park, where they ran a mini-camp for RSSA soccer teams. Taking 2 U-6 teams, 1 U-9 team, and a U-10 team, the girls played some games, ran drills, a played with the young kids. It was a great evening for the girls and the kids they worked with. Every player got a chance to work on their budding soccer skills and the Mustangs got a chance to share their talents. Parents, coaches, and players alike laughed and played until darkness fell. It was the perfect ending to a perfect afternoon, one that involved nothing but the giving of their time to the community that has given them so much!!

Take Highway 34 into Greeley. Take a left on 11th Avenue. Take a left onto 20th. At the next light(14th Avenue), take a left into UNC Campus. The new synthetic field will be just south of the parking lot directly behind Butler-Hancock Hall.

The games during the season for the women are going to be on the grass field behind the two synthetic fields.

Mustangs stampede Cougars in Scottsbluff

The Mustangs rolled into Scottsbluff hoping to avoid a two game losing streak on a field where they had never played well. 2010 has been a season of firsts for the Mustang women and Saturday would be no different. It was a typical Region IX match, fast and physical, with both teams pushing the other. The Mustangs drew first blood, as Stephanie Guerrero stole the ball, took a touch and passed the ball to Alyssa Moreno, who headed the ball over the keepers hands to take a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute. The Cougars would not go easily and fought the Mustangs hard, but in the 20th minute, Kaitlin Berberich sent a through ball to Jay Himelright who slid the ball under the keeper and off the post for a 2-0 lead. It took another nineteen minutes, for the Mustangs to score again, as Adar Westling fed Jay again, who sidestepped the keeper and placed the ball in the open net for a 3-0 lead at half. As the second half began, the Mustangs knew the strength of the Cougars and didn't want to let them back into the game. Caitlyn Chesnovar flicked a ball to Alyssa Moreno, who hammered the ball over the keepers hands to make the score 4-0 in the 51st minute. Despite being down 4-0, the Cougars kept fighting to get back into the game. Every time the Cougars tried to make a run, the defense would catch them offsides, or challenge a shot to keep it off frame. Both teams battled for the rest of the half and Jay Himelright got her hat trick in the 89th minute off an assist from Mandi Johnson to finish the game 5-0. The win puts the Mustangs into second place in Region IX and improves their record to 8-4. Their next games are in Greeley, Colorado at the UNC Invitational Tournament.

Golden Eagles outlast Mustangs in Cheyenne

Coming of an overtime win in Powell and a late night bus trip, it stood to reason that the Mustangs would come out a little flat vs LCCC. The Golden Eagles, remembering their victory earlier in the season, came out to beat the Mustangs badly. It didn't look good either, as the Eagles scored in the first 30 seconds to lead 1-0. It looked like a repeat of the Mustangs earlier defeat to LCCC, but the heart of the Mustangs came through. Digging deep, the Mustangs fought back and gave the Eagles the best they had. Despite the Eagles best efforts, the Mustangs battled all half to keep the score 1-0. The Mustangs continued to fight to find their offensive rhythm, while trying to keep the Eagles out of the net. Using the offsides trap, their defense kept the Eagles off balance, catching them offsides repeatedly. In the 78th minute, the Mustangs perserverance paid off, as Jay Himelright took a pass from Caitlyn Chesnovar and scored, tying the game 1-1. The injury bug bit the Mustangs just minutes later, as Katie Engstrom got kicked in the head making a save, then Kelly Uriarte sprained her MCL fighting for a ball. Having to reposition players hurt the Mustangs as LCCC scored two goals in the 83rd minute to take a 3-1 lead. Despite their best efforts, the Mustangs could get no closer and the game ended 3-1. Though disappointed, the Mustangs had much to be proud of, playing ninety minutes hard and making the Eagles earn every goal. The loss drops the Mustangs to 7-4 and 2-2 in region with another region match vs Western Nebraska on Saturday.

Mustangs down Trappers to earn overtime win

September 28, Powell, Wyoming-

The Mustang women played Northwest hoping to win their second region game vs the Lady Trappers. Playing on their home field, the Lady Trappers had different ideas about the outcome of the game. The Mustangs and Trappers played fast and physical during the first half, with each team playing solid soccer, but not being able to find the back of the net; the first half ended in a 0-0 tie. The Lady Trappers came out furiously in the second scoring in the 48th and 50th minutes threatening to run away with the game, until the 61st minute. Jessica Monsen, who earned her first start at midfield, placed a corner kick into the box where Alyssa Moreno headed the ball over the keeper to make the score 2-1. Three minutes later, Alyssa stole the ball, turned, shot and roofed the keeper from 40 yards out to tie the score 2-2. Both teams fought till the end of regulation, trying to put the other team away, but neither team could score, so the game went to overtime. In the first overtime, both teams made runs and had good shots, but neither were able to score leading to the second overtime. The Mustang women circled the wagons and came out determined to put the game away and in the 101st minute, Jay Himelright took a pass from Adar Westling headed to the endline, where she fed a wide open Caitlyn Chesnovar who scored the game winning goal! The 3-2 overtime win was the first in the history of Western womens soccer and improved the teams record to 7-3 and 2-1 in Region play. The Mustangs have very little time to celebrate, being as they travel to Cheyenne for a rematch vs LCCC on the 29th.

September 18- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The Western Wyoming Women returned to their winning ways today against the Air Force Prep Huskies. After the tough loss against SLCC the night before, there was a worry that the Mustangs would come out flat. Caitlyn Chesnovar and Jay Himelright made sure that wasn't going to happen. Jay took the passing role early today as she fed Caitlyn who beat her defender and hit a great left-footed cross to take a 1-0 lead in the tenth minute. Caitlyn wasn't finished scoring as she took a pass from Kelly Uriarte and beat the charging keeper for a 2-0 lead at the 16th minute. It looked like the Mustangs were going to run away with the game as Jay earned her second assist of the game, as Kelly Uriarte scored her first goal of the season off a cross from Jay. Leading 3-0 didn't seem to be enough for the Mustangs, so they continued to attack the Huskies but couldn't find the net. The Huskies refused to give up and scored on a beautiful long shot in the 44th minute to go into halftime trailing 3-1. As the second half began, the injury bug started to bite the Mustangs. There were no serious injuries, but nagging injuries bothered Brooke McDonald, Kathryn Peel, Jay Himelright and Mandi Johnson. The Huskies took advantage of the shorthanded Mustangs and continued to pressure them until they scored again in the 60th minute making the score 3-2. The Mustangs refused to give up, as all the injured girls re-entered the game and Jay Himeright put the nail in the Huskies coffin in the 75th minute off the 2nd assist from Kelly Uriarte to make the final score 4-2. The win makes the Mustangs record now 5-3 and they, gratefully, have a full week until there next game vs UW Womens club here at Crossroads field.

Bruins down Mustangs in wild one

September 17- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The Bruins from SLCC came to Rock Springs for a regular season win over the Mustangs. The Bruins came to crush the Mustangs and hit the throttle as they scored in the 35th second of the game. The Bruins scored again in the 6th and the 9th minutes and were looking like they would run away with the game. As the game went on, the Mustangs calmed down and began to play much better soccer. In the 20th minute, Shelby Clayson earned her third assist of the season, by feeding Jay who scored to make the score 3-1. In the next minute, the Mustangs hit again as Brooke McDonald passed to Sloan Allred, who placed the ball over the keeper for her first goal of the season and Brookes first assist of her career. Brooke earned her second assist twelve minutes later as she fed Jay for her second goal of the game that tied the score 3-3. The Bruins roared back to score two more goals in the 37th minute to lead at half 5-3. The Mustangs stampeded into the second half as Jay Himelright scored unassisted in the 47th minute to make the score 5-4. Both teams settled down and battled for the next twenty minutes until the Bruins scored in the 63rd and 68th minutes to lead 7-4. The Mustangs had one last run in them, as Kelsey Diedrich scored in the 75th minute off an assist from Jay and then Jay scored her fourth and final goal off an assist from Kathryn Peel to make the score 7-6. Inspite of their best efforts, the clock ran out on the Mustangs with the score 7-6. It was a hard-fought loss, but there is many positive aspects as the Mustangs refused to give up and battled back again and again. The loss drops the Mustangs to 4-3 overall, with a game tomorrow vs. Air Force Prep where the Mustangs will look to get well with a win.

September 15- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The LCCC Golden Eagles proved why they are the best team in Region IX today as they took on the Mustangs at Crossroads Field. Both teams were tied for first place in the region and this game would put the winner in the drivers seat for the 1st seed in the region tournament. LCCC put themselves there with an extremely strong performance. The Mustangs defense struggled all day trying to figure out the Eagles precision-like attack. The Eagles scored off a direct kick in the tenth minute and it looked like that would be it for the first half, but then the flood gates opened. The Eagles scored in the 21st, 29th, 31st, and 42nd minutes to take a 5-0 lead at halftime. The beleaguered Mustangs came off the field and really took stock of themselves. It was soulsearching time for the Mustangs, as they looked at how they played the first half and how they wanted the game to end. As the second half started, the Mustangs showed their toughness. Putting the score behind them, they went out to win the second half play till the whistle blew. LCCC found the goal again in the 68th minute, inspite of the Mustangs efforts. However, in the next minute, Jay Himelright, took the ball, attacked the defense, and while they were on their heels spun and roofed the keeper from 30 yards out for her tenth goal of the season. The Mustangs fought hard and played much better through the rest of the half and the game ended 7-1. Though it was a big loss, both on the scoreboard and in the region, Western has much to be proud of!! The Mustang women didn't give up on themselves, or each other. They played hard and pushed themselves to improve after a rough first half. It gave the game a positive feel and gives them something to build on for their two upcoming games on Friday and Saturday here at home. The Mustangs record is now 4-2 and 1-1 in region play. With SLCC coming on Friday, the Mustangs will be ready to go.

September 11- Cheyenne, Wyoming-

On a brilliant, sunny day in Cheyenne, the Mustang Women played another hard-fought game and found a way to win!! Looking to avenge a 2009 4-2 loss the Mustangs welcomed the Cougars to Cheyenne, where the Cougars were looking for two in a row versus WWCC. The game started well for the Cougars, as they took control of the ball, and attacked the goal immediately. In the first minute, a Cougar forward hit a rocket off the post and it bounced harmlessly away from the goal.; it would be a theme for the Cougars all day. The Mustangs fought hard all game and had to overcome hardship, as Whitney Cranmore was injured in the first five minutes of the game. Losing their central defender, put the Mustangs in a tough position because they now only had 2 subs for the rest of the game. The Cougars were on the attack all day, they ended up outshooting the Mustangs 36 to 8, but they never found the net. With a heroic effort, the Mustang defense pressured the Cougars on every shot. Assistant coach Ashley Thomas made a brilliant move in moving the team into a 3-5-2 formation to solidify the midfield. With the additional midfielders, it became increasingly difficult for Barton to get open shots and the Mustangs began to counterattack aggressively. Katie Engstrom, who had 28 saves, played her best game of the year and kept the Cougars caged and the Mustangs energized. It looked like overtime was coming until Caitlyn Chesnovar split the defense in the 86th minute for a break away run. The Cougars fouled Cait in the box for a penalty kick, which Jay Himelright calmly put into the lower right corner for ther 9th goal of the season. Leading 1-0, Katie and the defense withstood a furious last three and half minutes to win the game! The win makes the Mustangs 4-1 heading into a match with LCCC on Wendesday the 15th at Crossroads field. The only sad note in the game, was losing Whitney for the season as she tore her ACL. She will be missed, but the Mustangs have shown a toughness that will help them carry on.

September 10- Laramie, Wyoming-

The Mustangs rolled into Laramie riding a two game winning streak and looking to extend it to three. It was a crisp autumn-like afternoon as the game began and the cowgirl club came out aggressively. The Mustangs struggled early and often to find their rhythm offensively, however, they worked hard as a team to find it. Playing on the defensive side of the field the Mustangs had very few scoring opportunities, but they kept the game scoreless until the 37th minute, when Kaitlin Berberich chipped a ball over the defense to Jay Himelright who took the ball and put the ball into the upper left corner of the goal. Leading 1-0 going into halftime, the Mustangs looked to find a better offensive rhythm in the second half. The Cowgirls continued to attack the goal in the second half, the defense led by Katie Engstrom, who played exceptionally again, continued to fight to keep them from scoring. In the 66th minute, Shelby Clayson sent a throught ball to Jay, who scored again to put the game away, or so it seemed. The Cowgirls finally found the net four minutes later, as they scored off of a corner kick to make the score 2-1. The Mustangs continued to fight through their funk and in the 78th minute, Caitlyn Chesnovar, who played her best game of the year, scored the third goal of the game off an assist from Kelly Uriarte to make the game 3-1. The Mustangs stood strong for the next 12 minutes to win their 3rd straight and improve their record to 3-1. There will be little time to celebrate, being as they play Barton County CC tomorrow at noon in Cheyenne.

Mustangs dominate in Region IX home opener!!

September 7- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The Mustangs women started fast and furious in their Region IX home opener. Facing off against the Northwest Trappers, in their first varsity year, the Mustangs scored early and often. Before the fans could get comfortable Caitlyn Chesnovar, took a quick pass from Jay Himelright, and scored in the second minute of the game. Just seconds later, Jay stole the ball from a Trapper defender and scored unassisted to make the score 2-0 in the first two minutes. Jay would set a team record for goals scored in a game before it was over and the Trappers couldn't find a way to stop her. Twelve minutes later, Jay scored her second goal of the half, stealing the ball again, sidestepping the keeper and scored unassisted again. Leading 3-0 in the first 15 minutes, gave the Mustangs a sense of security that allowed the Trappers back into the game. Employing a physical style of play, the Trappers began to fight back and in the 40th minute they scored to make the score 3-1 at halftime. As the second half began, the Trappers continued their physical style of play trying to fight back into the game. However, the Mustang women stood firm against the trappers and began again to enforce their will upon them. Jay continued her record setting game, as she took a pass from Shelby Clayson, turned on two defenders and put the ball into the net over the keepers hands from 30 yards out; Jay wasn't finished scoring though. In the 84th minute, Kaylee Martinez got into the act, as she fought for the ball, won it and fed Jay for her 4th and final goal of the game which ended shortly thereafter 5-1. Inspite of Jay's recordsetting day, it was a great team win. Kaylee Martinez was a force off the bench in the middle and on the wing, Kelly Uriarte made great runs and opened areas for Jay to score and the defense, led by Whitney Cranmore and Katie Engstrom kept the Trappers out of the goal. The win improves the Mustangs record to 2-1 and 1-0 in Region IX play. The Mustangs next games are Friday at 4 pm in Laramie vs UW Women's Club team and Saturday 12 noon in Cheyenne vs Barton County CC.

Mustangs hang on to win first game

September 3, Colorado Springs, Colorado-

The Mustangs traveled to Colorado Springs for their second game of the season hoping to spoil Air Force Prep's parents day with a win. The Huskies started fast, scoring off a penalty kick in the second minute of the game. Leading 1-0, the Huskies became more aggressive, and the Mustangs used their aggression against them. Alyssa Moreno flicked a ball from an overloaded side to Kelsey Diedrich, who put the ball past the keeper for her first college goal and tied the game. The Mustangs took the lead for good in the 29th minute, as Jay Himelright took a free kick from 25 yards out that bounced off of the keepers hands and into the net. Jay, scored her second and final goal of the game taking a pass from Caitlyn Chesnovar, side stepping the keeper and placing the ball into the open net to take the Mustangs to half leading 3-1. As the second half began, it looked like the Mustangs would run away with the game, until Alyssa Moreno went down with a high ankle sprain. The injury took some steam out of the Mustang attack, inspite of the efforts of Kelly Uriarte and Jessica Monson both playing their most minutes of the season. As the Huskies gained momentum, the defense led by Shelby Clayson in her first start at defense of the season held them out of the goal. Air Force scored their second goal in the 55th minute to make the score 3-2. Adar Westling, Stephanie Guerrero, and Shelby continued to battle the Huskies and Katie Engstrom made spectacular save, after spectacular save to earn the Mustangs their first win of the season.

Mustangs Drop Season Opener

August 28, Coeur D'Alene Idaho-

The Mustang women played their best game of the young season in their opening, unfortunately, it ended in a loss. The Mustangs started fast and furious against the Cardinal, being led by Jay Himelright, getting some good looks at the goal. The Cardinal fought back quickly, taking a 1-0 lead off a corner kick. Both teams played well throughout the first half, but couldn't find the net as half ended with the same score. The first ten minutes of the first half ended the game for the Mustangs as the Cardinal scored two more goals. The Mustangs, led by Whitney Cranmore, Adar Westling, Jay Himelright, and Shelby Clayson continued to attack NIC, it just wasn't meant to be. NIC put one final goal in to end the game 4-0, but the game was far closer than the score indicates. The Mustangs controlled the ball most of the game and played very well, they get closer every game they play and will be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming games. Their season record is 0-1. They play next at Air Force Prep on 9/3 in Colorado Springs.

August 24- Rock Springs, Wyoming-

Preseason ended today for the Mustang women. Kickoff day started the day for the Mustangs as they prepared for their match vs Treasure Valley CC at Crossroads Field. On a beautiful August afternoon, the game started well for the Mustangs as Jessica Himelright scored in the 8th minute to take the lead 1-0 over the Chukars. The Chukars fought back to score in the 22nd and 39th minute to lead 2-1 at half. The Mustangs came out a little slow in the 2nd half and TVCC put a third goal up in the 51st minute and added a fourth in the 69th minute. Leading 4-1 it looked like the end of the afternoon for the Mustangs, but showing Mustang determination they fought back. Refusing to give up, the Mustangs turned up the heat in an effort to tie the game. Being led by Jessica Himelright and Ashley Roberts the offense returned up the heat. Roberts had some good looks, but the Chukar keeper kept the ball out of the net. However, in the 85th minute Roberts fed Jessica Himelright for her 2nd goal of the game to end the scoring. There were many positives from the game, even in a loss, the mustangs fought hard for 90 minutes and refused to give up. Kelly Uriarte got her first action of the season and they played together as a team.

In their first preseason game vs SLCC the Mustangs played like the young team they were. Playing in a new formation didn't help the Mustangs either. The Bruins started fast, scoring in the 6th minutes and added goals in the 21st, 30th, 35th, 36th, and 4oth minutes to lead 6-0 at half. Getting a chance to regroup at half time the Mustangs showed an early determination to never give up and fought through the second half. Generating offense they had 5 shots on goal in the second half, but couldn't find the goal. It was a tough loss, but the Mustangs learned alot about themselves in defeat. Instead of giving up, they pulled together and played better as a team in the second half and walked off the field with their heads held high.

It was a successful preseason. The girls worked hard, learned about themselves and each other as they worked hard on the practice field and fought homesickness. Most importantly, they learned how to play as a team and began to learn how to play the college game.

Those Living in the Dorms - Will need to stop into Resident Assistants Desk at Rocky Mountain Hall (dorm on campus). The Housing Department will have your dorm room information there, tell them that you are a member of the men’s soccer team and they will get you set to move in. Financial Aid - If you have not signed and turned in your letters of intent or other financial papers please do so and turn them in as soon as possible. (Remember National Letters of Intent are timed documents and need to be turned in quickly) You can bring them to WWCC on Monday and turn them into room #1004. I will be checking with the Financial Aid office during our first week to see what they need from each player.

Insurance - If you have not already completed and mailed back all of your insurance forms you will not be able to participate until at least Monday. If you have not yet mailed them in you will have to turn those in at the Athletic Office, room #3011. Those turning in their paperwork on Monday will need to get a note from the athletics secretary, Debi Monroe, that you are able to practice. If your paperwork is not turned in, then you will not be practicing until it is all completed and turned in. The athletic office is not open on Saturday August 7th so you have to send in your insurance info before you arrive if you want to participate in the team scrimmage of Saturday August 7th.

Frequently Asked Questions for moving in and First 2 weeks

Housing during our first two weeks – The school will pay for the housing during this time. There will be no additional charges for staying on campus during this time. You will be living in the dorm room that you have been assigned for the rest of the season with your roommates for the year.

Food during our first two weeks – The college will also pay for three meals a day. There will not be an additional charge for eating at the cafeteria during this time. You will have to eat at the appointed team meal times to get the meals. You might want to bring some money for snacks beyond that which the college will provide. Also, the cafeteria is not open before school starts on Sundays so bring money to pay for meals that day.

Equipment needed for practices - Remember to bring soccer cleats, shin guards, soccer socks, several pairs of work-out clothes both warm and cool weather, tennis shoes and a water bottle/container. We have ordered practice gear for the team but it may not arrive here before 8/7 and you will want other work-out clothes since we will train twice a day. I would request that all players bring their swimming suits as we may do some swimming/training in the water.

Team Scrimmage - Will be held on Saturday August 7th at 5pm - 7pm at the WWCC Campus field.

First practice – Will be held at 9:00 am – 12:00 pm on Monday August 9th at the WWCC Baseball field. We will begin with running and stretching. We will use the bulk on this first practice to work on ball skills, touches conditioning etc... Like almost all practices we will incorporate and finish with some additional conditioning.

Additional Items needed – Bring all the items you will need for college. We do have our first three Sundays off before school starts. For some this may be long enough to go home and get additional items they left behind but for others it may not be a long enough break so bring all of the items necessary for your dorm and essential college life.

What you can expect from practices? – I truly believe that to get better you must include the soccer ball in your training. But, I also know that we need to be in game shape as soon as possible, being as we have our first game five days after practice starts. We will condition every practice, we will lift weights, we will do plyos and speed training. We will also get touches on the ball every practice. We will run sprints every practice, if you do not come to WWCC in shape you will struggle! You need to do all of your summer work-out program or the first week or two of practice will be painful for you and it might cost you playing time in our first games, which I will use to determine a set starting line-up and a substitution rotation.

What if your paperwork is not completed or only half done? – If any of your athletic paperwork (physicals, insurance etc…) is not completely done you will have to get it finished before you can practice. All other paperwork needs to be finished before you are eligible to play in a scrimmage or a match.

FRIENDLY REMINDER!!!

Time is short, less than two weeks before two-a-days start. Here are a couple of items to be aware of.

1- Move in day for the Mustang Women's team is August 6, from 12 noon to 4 pm. Ladies, please make sure you are making preparations to be here on the 6th. Not only do we have physicals on the 7th at 9 am, we will be finalizing our team fundraiser that evening at our team barbeque. Also, you will need to have food for Saturday and Sunday, the team will cover meals from August 9th, until school starts.

2- You should be putting the final touches on your list for the team fundraiser. Remember, you have ten names and addresses that you need to bring with you on the 6th. This fundraiser is effective, but only if everybody does their part. Please don't be the girl to let the team down

Summer Update #2- July

All players need to make sure all of their paperwork is done before the first practice!!

1- All your paper work for admissions, registration, housing, etc, should be done by now. If not, please see update #1 for websites and phone numbers to get this done.

2- All incoming freshmen, you need to sign up for orientation. For those of you coming from long distances, set it up after you get to campus. Please check update #1 for the dates and times. Please let me know when you are coming, so I can hopefully meet you that day.

3- Please fill out your fafsa, if you have not already, it is a mandatory item for you to receive any scholarship, loans, grants, etc.

4- There is a physical test on your first day here. We will be running a mile and you have to run it under 7:30 minutes or you will run it every day until you make the time. Also, we will be running 5 eighties(my favorite sprint), you must make the time in under 20 seconds each, or you will run them everyday, before practice until you make the time. It's college soccer, girls, start taking it seriously.

5- You need to prepare to move into your apartments\dorms on August 6th, from noon to 4 pm. I know it's early, but we have team physicals on August 7th from 9-10:30 am at Hilltop Medical Center bldg 1204(across from Memorial Hospital), so you need to be here.
* You will need to get enough food for the weekend(Friday night- Sunday night). The team will take care of all your meals, starting on August 9th.

6- please don't waste your time. Get your paperwork done, without it, you can't practice which means you can't play.

Cranmore signs with the Mustangs!!

Whitney Cranmore signed her National Letter of Intent today, making her the first member of the Mustangs from Montana. Whitney was an all-state and academic all-state player at Corvallis High, where she anchored the midfield and defense in her four years as a starter and letterman. Whitney is a tough, physical player, who will solidify the Mustangs midfield for the next couple of seasons. Whitney is also a determined student, who is going to help the Mustangs continue to improve in the classroom too. All players need ot have all of their paperwork and adminstrative items taken care of and handed in before the first practice. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE THIS, GET IT DONE NOW!!!

1- If you have not applied for admissions to the college yet, do it now. Please see www.wwcc.wy.edu/admissions/registra.htm it only takes 15-20 minutes.

2- If you have not applied for housing yet, please do so. Please go to www.wwcc.wy.edu/housing and inform them that you are a member of the womens soccer team and they should have room reserved for you.

3- Please send in your housing deposit of $150.00. The sooner you do this the better! You can even do it by phone (307)382-1845.

4- If you have not already done so, please complete your FAFSA its found at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ ( this is a necessary step for all students getting financial aid who are US citizens). WWCC cannot award any scholarships, grants, loans, et al. without your FAFSA being done.

5- If you have not done so, please sign and return one copy of your National Letter of Intent, or your WWCC Letter of Committment. The NLI is for all scholarship athletes, the LoC is to let us know you are serious about coming to Western and playing soccer.

6- For those of you who have not received your NLI yet, you need to go to http://www.wwcc.wy.edu/athletics/eligibility_affadavit.pdf print it out, fill it out and mail it back to the college, in care of Financial Aid, or fax it to (307)382-1631 attn. DeeAnna Archuleta. It needs to be filled out before you can get your Letter of Intent.

7- For all new students at WWCC you need to attend an orientation and advising session. The remaining dates are July 13, 1 pm and 6 pm, July 29th, 1 pm and 6 pm, August 4th, 1 pm and 6 pm and August 12, 1 pm and 6 pm. When you decide which best fits your schedule, please register at www.wwcc.wy.edu/advising/notice/htm Please realize that you will be on campus for the Aug. 12th date, so that might work well for alot of you coming from out of town. However, you must reserve your spot now. YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO PLAY UNTIL THIS IS COMPLETE. Also, please inform me of when you are coming, so that I can try to meet you on campus for your visit.

8- The college is taking care of physicals for the athletes this year. Right now the physicals are scheduled for August 7. It is mandatory for every player to get your physical here, so please plan to be here at the latest August 7 by noon. Sometime things do change do to availability of dorms, etc.

9-As you register, please realize that practice will be from 4 pm to 6 pm, or 6pm to 8 pm every day, so please try not to schedule classes, or labs during these times.

10- Please send your final high school transcripts and any other transcripts to WWCC as soon as possible. This is highly important, because any and all transcripts need to be cleared before you become eligible to play in the fall.

11- Please see the link on the right, for Off Season workout. This is set up for you to do every day. There is a fitness test on August 7th, if you fail it will effect your ability to practice and your playing time during the season.

12-I am currently releasing information on all of our signees for the fall. Fundraiser

Last season the Mustang Women participated in a fundraiser, which helped the team immensely. We will be doing the same fundraiser this season. It is simple, but there are a few steps needed, they are:

1- Compile a list of friends, family members, neighbors, etc. who you feel would be willing to donate to the Western team.

2- Out of the list pick the 10 best candidates.

3- Bring the list of candidates, along with mailing address with you to Western, where you will be instructed how these names and addresses will be used.

Caitlyn is a four year starting defender and midfielder at Rock Springs High, she is also a three year captain, has been voted all conference twice, was 2nd team all-state last season. Both girls finish their Western careers at All-Region IX performers and Academic All-Region and All-Conference students. Two transfers join 2010 WSC women's soccer recruiting class

Wayne State College head women’s soccer coach Molly Grisham announced today that Elizabeth Israelsen and Darian Mochizuki (pronounced mo-cha-zoo-key) of Western Wyoming Community College will transfer to Wayne State College and play soccer for the Wildcats in the 2010 season. The junior college transfers increase the size of the 2010 Wildcat recruiting class to nine members, joining Audrey Asplund of New Castle, Colorado, Heather Faltes of Lincoln, Nebraska, Macy Hagen of Bellevue, Nebraska, Kayli Hopper of Norfolk, Nebraska, Kelly Lange of Omaha, Nebraska, Norma Volkmer of Lincoln, Nebraska and Ryan Wells of Arlington, Texas. Both players will have two years of eligibility with the Wildcats.
Elizabeth Israelsen is a 5-4 defender from Smithfield, Utah that scored three goals with two assists last season at Western Wyoming CC. She earned All-Region honors and was Academic All-Region last season helping Western Wyoming to a 7-6-1 record. Israelsen was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in the 2008 season. In high school at Sky View High School in Utah, she was an All-State selection her senior season and was a two-time All-Region performer.
“Liz will be a great addition to our team,” remarked Coach Grisham. “I believe she will play a positive role in our back line or central midfield. She not only has the physical traits needed to contribute to our team but also has two years of college experience. Her comfort level with the ball will serve her very well within our style of play.”
Darian Mochizuki is a 5-2 defender from Kearns, Utah and was named the Most Valuable Player at Western Wyoming Community College last fall, earning Region IX First Team All-Region and Academic All-Region honors with two goals from her defender position. In high school at Kearns Senior High in Utah, she was a three year standout in both soccer and track and field.
“I believe Darian has the skills to earn immediate time in our back line or in our central midfield,” commented Grisham. “She brings two years of playing experience and leadership to our team and her work in the classroom is also outstanding. Darian is very calm on the ball and she knows when to clear under pressure and when to possess. I am very excited to add Darian to our team.” Wayne State College is an NCAA Division II school located in Wayne, Nebraska and competes in the 14-team Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Wildcats finished the 2009 season with a record of 4-15-1 overall and 1-11-1 in the Northern Sun Conference.

With the season getting closer, there will be more updates in the coming months, letting you know what needs to be done to get ready to play at Western.

#1- All girls who have either signed letters of commitment, or National Letters of Intent, need to pay their housing fees. There will be rooms ready for every girl, however, you will not receive a room if you have not payed the housing deposit.

#2- Make sure that you have prepared your final transcripts from your high school to be sent to Western, after you graduate. Even though you have been accepted to the school, you will not be eligible to play unless we have your final official high school transcript, before August 14.

#3- Please sign up for orientation. All incoming Freshmen must attend orientation to register for classes. If you can get to orientation before August that would be ideal, for those of you coming longer distances, set up your date for after your arrival on campus. Please check www.wwcc.wy.edu for available orientation dates.

#4- You will not need to take a physical before reporting to Western. The school will be providing a doctor for all fall players physicals. This will be done on the morning of August 9th at a discounted rate, so please prepare to check into your dorm\apartment on either August 7th, or 8th.

This morning at Buffalo High School, Ashley Roberts signed her National Letter of Intent with Western Wyoming Community College. Ashley is the first player to officially sign with Western for the 2010 season and we're ecstatic to have her join the team!! Ashley was first team all-state as a sophomore and has been all-conference the last two seasons while playing Goalie for the Lady Bison. Team awards were announced at the annual end of season team party tonight. As the Mustang women enjoyed pizza, ice cream cake, and the team video; the team awards were announced. It was a banner season for the Mustang women, who set a record for wins in a season, region wins, and also earned the first winning month in team history(October going 3-2-1). It was also a time to honor the sophomores one more time and to challenge the freshmen to carry the program forward. Today the WWCC Women's team elected their practice captains for the off-season. In an effort to allow the freshmen to lead our team into next season, the four regular season captains were released today. We thank Darian Mochizuki, Kylie Ashton, Liz Israelsen, and Oralia Gutierrez for leading our team for the past two seasons; they were great examples!!

The team voted today and Taryn Roosa and Adar Westling, both from Green River, were named practice captains. Both were leaders on and off the field and we're excited for them to lead the team into next season.

The Mustangs were matched against the Cougars of WNCC again in the Region IX semifinal. Both teams had beaten the other on their home fields, so the Mustangs were looking forward to a neutral sight. The Mustangs had set a goal of winning the Region IX crown at the first of the season and their first step to achieving this goal would be beating WNCC. The Cougars came out hot, they scored their first goal just 18 seconds into play. Despite the shock, the Mustangs regrouped and fought back, but the Cougars kept their style of play going all half. Scoring again in the 22nd minute the Cougars led 2-0 at half. As the second half began, the Mustangs began to play their style of soccer and controlled the ball. Playing into the wind made their efforts even tougher and the Cougars defense held strong. The clock became the Mustangs worst enemy, as it ticked the life out of their efforts. As time wore down, every sophomore entered the game so as to finish their careers at Western on the playing field.
The 2-0 loss was a disappointing end to the season, but the Mustangs have much to be proud of, especially the sophomores. They are the first varsity class at Western and helped turn the team into a force to be reckoned with. They established the "Western" way to play soccer, i.e. playing till the whistle blows and leaving it all on the field. We want to thank Shquibby, Kooch, G, Oreo, Smap, Smap, Megs, Kat, Kait, BH 2, for all they have given to Western. They will always be remembered and their legacy will live on as Western Women's Soccer continues to grow.

Cougars take a bite outta the 'Stangs

October 16, Scottsbluff, Nebraska-

The Mustangs invaded Scottsbluff with intentions of ruining the Cougars sophomore day and finishing 2nd in Region IX. The Cougars had a different ideas about the outcome of the game. The Cougars came out on fire and pressed the Mustangs for the entire first half. The Mustangs struggled to find their rhythm against a tough Cougar defense for most of the game. The Cougars, on the other hand, scored on a corner kick in the 30th minute and on a break away in the 37th minute to lead 2-0 at half. The Mustangs kicked their heals in the second half and made the Cougars earn the game. Brittney Haden played her first game since early September and gave the Mustangs a spark. Alyssa Moreno shot 3 balls off of the crossbar, but the Mustangs couldn't find the net. Finally, in the 84th minute, Wendy Davis scored her first career goal off of an assist from Taryn Roosa. The final score was 2-1, leaving the Mustangs regular season 6-8-1 and 1-3 in Region IX. The Mustangs now look forward to the Region IX tournament next week in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Mustangs down the 'Zags

October 10, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho-

Coming off their worst loss in two years, the Mustang women rebounded nicely against Gonzaga. Acacia Tille started the scoring, as she scored her first goal of the season from an assist from Alyssa Moreno. Both teams battled back and forth during the first half and the 'Zags tied the game in the 23rd minute. The half ended in a
1-1 tie. As the second half started, the superior training of the Mustangs started taking its toll. Jessica Little scored in the 47th minute from an assist from Jay Himelright. This ended the scoring for the game, as it got physical quick. Within the next ten minutes 3 girls were sent to the hospital, due to physical play. The win improves the Mustangs record to 6-7-1 and gives them the opportunity to finish the regular season with a .500 record with a victory over region rival Western Nebraska in the season finale next week.

Mustangs stumble in Idaho

October, 9, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho-

On a cold, blustery day in Idaho the Cardinal of NIC scored early and often on the Mustangs. The Cardinal scored in the 9th and the 11th minutes to take an early 2-0 lead, however, the Mustangs fought back as Kylie Ashton hit the net from 40 yards out making it 2-1 in the 21st minute. NIC virtually ended the competition, scoring 3 more goals to make the game 5-1 at half. As the half started, the Mustangs showed fire and made some good runs, but the Cardinal put any thought of a comeback away as they scored in the 57th, 59th, and 65th minute. Leading 8-1, the Cardinal went into ball control mode, keeping the ball away from the Mustangs. Darian Mochizuki scored the 2nd and last goal of the day, taking as assist from Kait Lybbert to make the final score 8-2. The loss drops the Mustangs to 5-7-1 who look to rebound vs. Gonzaga tomorrow.

On a gorgeous fall afternoon, the Mustang Women travelled to Salt Lake to avenge their preseason loss to the Bruins of SLCC. Losing 3-1 in their home opener to SLCC, gave the Mustangs plenty of motivation to win. The game was a tale of two halves for the Mustangs. In the first half the Mustangs dominated the play and led 1-0 as Jay Himelright stole a pass and scored unassisted. As the teams switched sides, so did the momentum. The Bruins were a completely different team in the second half and so were the Mustangs. Megan Grosvenor, playing in goal for the first time, took the Bruins shooting barrage head on. Despite their fierce attack, the Mustang defense held tight and it looked like they'd pull off the victory. However, in the 75th minute Ana Melendez scored unassisted to tie the game 1-1. The Bruins turned up the heat and thanks to some specatular saves by Megan, regulation ended 1-1. The Mustang women found their energy during the two overtime periods, but couldn't find the net, so the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The Mustangs record stands 5-6-1, as they head to Idaho to play NIC and Gonzaga.

Lady 'Pokes fall to Mustangs again.

October 3, Rock Springs, Wy-

The UW Ladies Club came to Rock Springs to try to avenge an early loss to WWCC. The Lady 'Pokes came out tough and shocked the Mustangs by their tough play. The score was tied into the 39th minute, when Camille Woodword(G)fed Killer Moreno who made the score 1-0. Killer continued her scoring spree in the 43rd minute, off of an assist from Jay Himelright and the half ended 2-0. The Mustangs kept pounding the goal, but exceptional keeping from Amy Hammer, the UW keeper, kept the ball out of the net. Liz Israelsen(Shquib)finished off the scoring as she took a direct kick from 30 yards out and hammered into the upper corner to make the score 3-0. The Mustangs continued to hammer the goal, but the final ended 3-0. The Mustangs improved their record to 5-6 and are taking their 2 game winning streak to SLCC next week.

Mustangs Rebound!

October 2, Rock Springs, Wy-

Coming off of the tough loss to Region rival LCCC, the Mustang Women welcomed the Air Force Huskies to Crossroads Field. It looked like a blowout was coming, as Alyssa Moreno scored unassisted in the 1st minute. Despite controlling the tempo of the game and outshooting the Huskies 3 to 1, the score remained 1-0 into the 34th minute. The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead, as Jessica Himelright kicked a perfect corner and Killer Moreno headed the ball into the net. However, in the same minute the Huskies #10 scored unassisted to make the game 2-1, where it remained till half. The Huskies fought hard into the 55th minute when Jessica Himelright got fouled from behind on a break-away, then, cooly, scored the Pk to make the lead 3-1. Jay finished the scoring in 4 minutes later, taking a pass from Kylie Ashton and scoring the fourth and final goal. The Mustangs went into cruise control and the game ended with another home victory. The Mustangs improved to 4-6 and play UW Womens club tomorrow in the final home game of the season.

Tough loss drops WWCC into second place

September 30, Rock Springs, Wyoming-

The Golden Eagles of LCCC came to Rock Springs, for a battle for first place in Region IX. In weather that felt more like January than September, both teams brought their best to this battle. Using the offsides trap, the Mustangs kept the Eagles off balance with 8 offsides call in the first half and the Mustangs struck first as Sloan Allred took a pass from Jessica Little and hammered her first region goal to take a 1-0 lead. The goal seemed to wake the Eagles up and Emi Yamamoto, who plays for the Chinese National Team, scored unassisted to make the game 1-1 at half. Both teams continued to battle in this defensive struggle throughout the second half as both defense and keepers kept the other team out of goal. It looked like the game was going to overtime, but a miscommunication by the Mustangs led to a Cori Mizel goal as time expired to give the Mustangs a 2-1 loss. Despite the tough loss, there were positives for WWCC, Megan Grosvenor returned to give the team a lift and Sloan Allred did score her first region goal. The Mustangs fell to 3-6, and 1-2 in Region IX as they finish their home season vs. Air Force Prep and UW Club this weekend.

Mustangs trample the Lady 'pokes club

September 25, Laramie, Wyoming-

The Mustang women traveled to Laramie for another tough game in Laramie, Wyoming. The Mustangs numbers continued to fall, as Alyssa Moreno and Oralia Gutierrez were unable to play and Darian Mochizuki was only available in 5 minute spurts.Despite the unseasonably cold weather and few numbers the Mustangs came out fast and furious. Kat Parkin scored in the third minute off an assist by Kylie Ashton. Thirty seconds later, Liz Israelsen sent a perfect through ball to Jessica Himelright and it was quickly 2-0. It looked like it was going to be a blowout, but the Mustangs settled into a ball control mode and led 2-0 at half. The Mustangs continued to control the game with quick passes and great communication, but couldn't find the goal until the 61st minute, when Darian Mochizuki scored her first career goal off an assist from Jessica Little. The SMAP combination finished the scoring as the tough Mustang defense led by Liz Israelsen only gave up 2 shots all game. The Mustangs improve to 3-5 and look forward to the battle for first place vs. LCCC in Rock Springs.

Trouble in the Mines

September 19, Colorado Springs, Colorado-

Playing their second game in two days the Mustang women took the field against the Colorado School of Mines. The Mustangs were a little short handed, being as Oralia Gutierrez hurt her shoulder the previous day, but they took the field with confidence. Playing a very physical, tough Mines team scoring didn't come easily. However, the Mustangs led by Alyssa Moreno they controlled the ball for most of the first half. Mines tried to counterattack, but the stout defense of Mochizuki, Westling, Israelsen, and Davis kept them out of the goal as the half ended 0-0. It was more of the same in the second half, tough, physical soccer. Then in the 60th minute, Killer Moreno made a great run on goal, planted to shoot and her ankle gave out. Losing her took a little starch out of the Mustangs and in the 79th minute Mines scored the only goal of the game. Trailing 1-0 the Mustangs put a furious effort into scoring. Liz Israelsen moved up to forward and had 5 shots in the final minutes, but the Mustangs couldn't put the ball into the net falling 1-0. The Mustangs fell to 2-5 and continue their road trip vs. UW Women's Club.

Mustangs Down the Huskies

September 18, Colorado Springs-

The Mustang Women continued their road trip in Colorado Springs playing the Huskies of Air Force Prep. The Mustangs got off the bus and went right onto the field with very little prep time. It took them a while to get started playing a tough Husky team. Killer Moreno got the party started as she scored, unassisted, in the 26th minute. Six minutes later, Shquibby, got her second goal of the season, and it looked like the Mustangs were off to the races leading 2-0. The Huskies, refusing to quit, scored to make the score 2-1. Jessica Little scored in the 38th minute and the Mustangs led 3-1 at half. Killer got her second goal in the 47th minute and, essentially ended the game. However, Camille Woodward (G), put the icing on the cake in the 71st minute and the Mustangs finished the game 5-1. The only down note was Acacia Tille breaking her arm and Oralia Gutierrez hurt her shoulder and both made trips to the emergency room. The Mustangs improved their record to 2-4 and play Colorado School of Mines tomorrow.

Mustangs Fall to LCCC

September 16- Cheyenne, Wyoming

The Mustangs traveled to Cheyenne for a first place show down with the Golden Eagles on a beautiful fall afternoon. The Golden Eagles started the game fast and furious and the before the Mustangs could settle down, they were trailing 2-0. It looked like a rematch of their last trip to Cheyenne, when the Mustangs lost 6-0, but the women turned the tables and started playing Western soccer. Moving the ball quickly and smartly, they kept the ball their side of the field for most of first half, but they could not find the goal. Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Mustang Women were determined to get back into the game. Again controlling the ball, the Mustangs had good looks, but a very solid LCCC defense kept them out of the goal. The Golden Eagles added their 3rd goal in the 77th minute, as Kelly Parkhurst made a nice cutback shot and it seemed the game was over. However, the Mustangs kept the pressure on and Liz Israelsen got her first goal of the season; hitting a beautiful shot off a free kick. Although the Mustangs kept pressuring LCCC, the game ended 3-1. Inspite of the loss, the Mustang Women took heart in knowing they can play with the Golden Eagles and look forward to seeing them in Rock Springs in two weeks. The Mustangs fell to 1-4 and 1-1 in Region IX.

Heartbreaker

September 12, 2009, Rock Springs.

A day after they beat Western Nebraska, the Mustangs were back on the field playing the NIC Cardinal. After an emotional win, the fear was that the team would have an emotional let down. There was no need to worry. Playing in their new 3-4-3 formation, the Mustangs controlled the game. Playing 80% of the game on their side of the field, the Mustang women outshot the Cardinal 21 to 8, however, they couldn't find the back of the net. A very stout Mustang defense, led by Darian Mochizuki, foiled every Cardinal effort to score. The Mustang women ended the game with a flurry of shots, but outstanding keeping by NIC kept the score tied 0-0 at the end of regulation. In the overtime the Mustangs again continued controlling the ball and putting pressure on the Cardinal. In the 98th minute, the Cardinal forward Brittany Cook, got her only good look at the goal and put the ball in the goal to end the game. Despite the loss, the Mustangs gained more confidence in their new formation and look forward to the rest of the season. Next game vs. LCCC in Cheyenne. Season record 1-3, 1-0 in Region IX.

September 11, 2009- Rock Springs, Wyoming.

The Mustang Women made history today is earning their first Region IX win, and to top it off, it was a shutout! Facing the Western Nebraska Cougars at home, the Mustangs knew they were in for a fight. WNCC didn't disappoint, as they came to play. On a beautiful, sunny afternoon, the game started, and in typical WWCC vs. WNCC fashion- it was a tough game. Both teams had their chances in the first half, but it ended tied 0-0. The Mustangs had changed formations to a 3-4-3 and their offensive pressure paid off in the 68th minute, as Brittney Haden, scored her first goal of the season on an assist from Liz Israelsen, placing her shot perfectly over the hands of the Cougar Keeper. Leading for the first time in a Region IX game inspired the Mustangs and they began to further exert their will. Keeping the ball in their half of the field, they effectively stopped the Cougars from counterattacking. Oralia Gutierrez, in her first region start, dominated the game in the goal and kept the defense energized. Alyssa Moreno, assisted by Camille Woodward, finished the scoring as she placed the ball over the keepers hands and into the goal. The clock wound down and the Mustang women celebrated their first Region IX victory in team history! They were also pleased to be sitting in first place in Region IX, going into their next game vs. Region IX powerhouse LCCC. The only down note, was finding out that Brittney Haden sprained her MCL on her game winning goal. We wish her a speedy recovery and will miss her presence on the field. Mustang record is now 1-2, and 1-0 in Region IX.

September 4- Laramie, Wyoming- The Mustang women traveled to Laramie for a "home"game vs. Barton County CC. The Mustangs played their best and most consistent game of the season, but a five minute lapse cost the girls the game. The Mustangs controlled the ball most of the game and kept the Cougars on the defensive side of their field for 80 minutes. A penalty kick gave the Cougars the a 1-0 lead and before the Mustangs could turn around, the Cougars scored again for a 2-0 lead at half. The Cougars struck again, in the 47th minute, to take a commanding 3-0 lead which was extended as another great shot in the 54th minute made the score 4-0. The Mustangs finally found the back of the net in the 58th minute as Sloan Allred headed a pass from Kat Parkin to make the lead 4-1. The Mustangs continued to pressure the Cougars, keeping the ball on their side of the field and in the 75th minute, Kait Lybbert headed a corner from Jay Himelright to make it 4-2. Inspite of their ball control and furious finish the final score was 4-2. The Cougar keeper was stellar marking 23 saves on the day. The Mustangs fall to 0-2 in the regular season and 0-5 overall. They prepare for Western Nebraska in the Region IX opener, at home, next Friday.

Mustangs fall in regular season opener

August 28, 2009- Ontario, Oregon.

In the regular season opener, the Mustangs lost a spirited battle to the Treasure Valley Chukars. Treasure Valley came out hot and led the game 2-0 at halftime. The Mustang women dominated the second half; possessing the ball for the first 25 minutes of the half. Sloan Allred, earned her first assist of the season and her career, as she fed Jessica Little from the "Sweet Spot" and the score was 2-1 in the 60th minute. Treasure Valley countered with a goal a few minutes later to lead 3-1 and the game looked like it was over. However, "Killer" Moreno took an inbound pass from Taryn Roosa in the 82nd minute, spun to her left and buried a shot from the goal box corner into the upper 90 to make the score 3-2. The Chukars ended the scoring in the 87th minute as they shot one just over the finger tips of Oreo to ice the 4-2 win. The Mustang women, again, showed their resilience as they fought for the full 90 minutes. It's a trait that will take them a long way this season. Next game Barton County CC in Laramie, Wyoming. Tough Loss for road weary Mustangs

The Mustang Women have seen a lot of the Western U.S. as they took on the Coyotes of the College of Idaho today. Playing their second 4 year school in their first 3 games the Mustangs fought courageously in 95 degree heat. Starting in her first game, Oralia Gutierrez, led the Mustangs from her keeper position. The Coyotes played fast and furious, scoring in the tenth minute to lead 1-0. The Mustangs defense, Liz Israelsen, Brittney Haden, Darian Mochizuki, Camille Woodward, and Adar Westling bowed their necks and refused to give up another goal. Again struggling to find their offensive flow, the Mustangs battled for the entire 90 minutes, and inspite of some great runs and good shots, just couldn't put the ball into the back of the net. The Coyotes scored again in the 80th minute to win 2-0, but the Mustangs walked off the field with heads held high, because they had left it all on the field in their final preseason game. Preseason record 0-3. Next game, TVCC in Ontario, Oregon in the regular season opener.

SLCC stuns Mustangs in home opener

August 22- Rock Springs.

In a tough home opener, the Mustang women began their home schedule vs. Salt Lake Community College. The Bruins came out fast and furious, scoring in the 4th minute to lead 1-0. The Mustangs, were confused by the Bruins flat four defense and had trouble making offensive runs. Jessica Himelright took a defensive mistake in the 44th minute and hammered into the right upper 90 to tie the score 1-1 at half. The Mustangs continued to be confused by the flat four and could not find any offensive rhythm, while the Bruins continued to attack the goal. Scoring twice in the second half, the Bruins took home the victory 3-1. Preseason record 0-2. Next game College of Idaho in the pre-season final.
